Lowton and Golborne Bee Active Network

Together with our communities and partners, Wigan Council is committed to making all our towns and neighbourhoods flourish for those who live and work here and provide fairer opportunities for all.

Despite Lowton and Golborne being close together, walking, wheeling or cycling between the two areas can be difficult. The proposed Bee Active scheme aims to make it easier for people to walk, wheel, or cycle for short journeys to their destination, giving Lowton and Golborne residents, visitors, and businesses more options to ‘Bee Active.’

With the exciting announcement of the proposed new rail station in Golborne, this scheme will provide safe, high-quality connections into Golborne centre and to and around the new station itself. As well as supporting the station, the scheme will improve access to local services, like shops, schools, and green spaces. It will connect into existing pedestrian and cycling facilities and make it safer and easier to cross the A580 East Lancashire Road.

Key features and elements of the proposed scheme include:

The current proposals include:

(2) A new staggered Toucan crossing on the A580 East Lancashire Road, reconnecting both ends of Heath Lane for pedestrians and cyclists.

The left turn into Heath Lane on the south side of the A580 would be closed off, making it safer to cross here and at the new crossing point across the A580.

(3) A new multiuser pedestrian and cycleway along the north side of the A580 between Stone Cross Lane and Church Lane, improving links to Thompsons Farm Meadow and the Stirrups Farm Road estates

The Stirrups Farm Road estate is also proposed to become ‘quiet streets’ low speed and traffic volume streets that make it nicer and safer to walk and cycle on.

(5) A new separated pedestrian footway and cycleway around Stone Cross Park Industrial Estate, and improved links to Nook Lane and Bridge Street.

(6) Improvements to Nook Lane including a new segregated cycleway, zebra crossing, and bus stop improvements along the south side of Nook Lane, improving links to the future Golborne Station.

(7) The existing footpath between Bridge Street and Yew Tree Way would also be surfaced, widened and lit so it can be used by pedestrians and cyclists linking our proposed routes to existing infrastructure including the recently installed Toucan crossing on Bridge Street.
