Trees! More trees, please.

The recent hot and wet weather has shown clearly that Wigan is poorly equipped to deal with flooding and very sunny periods. The streets are exposed and paved, with little effective shade. This also has the effect of limiting natural biodiversity in the area.
Placing more tree cover along some of the local arterial and branching roads can help provide shade for pedestrians during particularly hot days, as well as providing rainwater absorption during heavy rainfall. This means that walking becomes more attractive, reducing the number of cars, as well as reducing the flooding risk.
Ormskirk Road, Enfield Street and Billinge road would be particularly effective areas and benefits of tree cover can already be seen on the Billinge Road stretch from Pemberton Station to Alexandra Park.
