Phase one - Survey
This was the first phase of our conversations to design the new Wigan borough equality approach to ensure everyone has the same opportunities and people feel like they belong and are included.
Community and voluntary groups worked in partnership with Wigan Council and the project's facilitators (Happy Smiles CIC and Everything Human Rights Community Group) to host a large engagement project to share local knowledge and lived experiences, which will raise the awareness of some local issues and strengths to find out how together we can identify and implement suitable solutions.
We hosted a launch event on 30th October 2023. At the launch event we showcased the achievements made so far and explained the opportunities to get involved within this engagement project.
The survey was open from 30th October to 6th May 2024.
Phases
The All Different, All Equal Promises
The conversations created three simple, powerful promises:
- Services, spaces, schools, workplaces and information across the borough should be easy to use, welcoming, and open to everyone. This means removing barriers; physical, digital, or cultural, so that everyone can take part, feel included, and access what they need in a way that works for them.
- Celebrating what makes people different and what brings them together, to help build stronger, kinder communities. By creating more opportunities to learn about each other’s experiences, cultures, and identities, the borough can grow understanding, challenge stereotypes, and strengthen social connections.
- Racial and disability inequality must be recognised and addressed through meaningful action. Discrimination and unfair treatment continue to affect too many lives. Tackling these issues head-on is essential to creating a fairer, more equal borough for all.
