Market Place - Scheme Proposals
As the Civic Square breathes a new lease of life into the heart of the town centre, offering a flexible and attractive space for cultural and community events, there are plans to complement the space on the adjacent road, Market Place - between the junctions of Lord Street and Church Street.
These proposals will complement the Square - making the area cleaner, greener, safer, and create a comfortable space to spend time.
The scheme puts the ‘Place’ back into ‘Market Place’ – by reducing the current ‘split’ caused by the major road corridor.
The aim is to enhance the area with new and improved crossings and facilities, building on the evolving ‘Civic’ quarter as a new destination for Leythers to take pride in.

Phases
Construction Period
Bethell Group PLC have been appointed to deliver both schemes simultaneously, starting on the 20th October 2025 for the highway and 27th October 2025 for the Square. Works are set to be complete on the highway in April 2026, and the Square in July 2026.
Please note the following information:
- The B5215 will remain open during construction, with temporary traffic lights and lane closures in place. From 1st December 2025 to 6th January 2026, all traffic management will be removed. Non-disruptive off-highway works will continue during this period
- Variable messaging and business open as usual signage will be displayed throughout construction to provide regular updates and support local trade
- The car park at Doctors Nook will be closed during construction - view our car parks webpage for a map of alternative car parks
- Full road closures are only required at the end of the scheme for final surfacing, with ample notice provided and completed out of core hours or on a Sunday
- As part of the early phases of work on the Square, 15 lime trees and 2 holly bushes are set to be removed. The existing trees were planted in inadequate tree pits and are not growing as they should be, with the roots also affecting the surface of the Square. A similar number will be replanted, to provide more space, better visibility and a safer environment.
For any emergencies out of hours, Bethell Group PLC can be contacted on 0330 912 2500.
