Phases
Consultation - on-road trials
Proposed changes to the road layout, one-way system, and School Street will be trialled from mid-August onwards.
Trialling these proposals first is a way for everyone to see if it works before permanently changing the road layout. The aim is to reduce traffic at peak school times and give some of the space back to people that is currently taken up with motor vehicles.
Whilst the trials are in place, you will have the opportunity to feedback and let us know your thoughts. We will talk to residents, schools, churchgoers, blue light services, and anyone else who regularly visits the area to understand the benefits and tackle any issues that arise.
AUGUST
Windermere Road will be reduced to one-lane:
The remaining lane will be made one-way eastbound from Grasmere Street to the car park entrance opposite Roydale House.
Walmesley Road will be reduced to one-lane:
The remaining lane will be made one-way westbound from Walmesley Court to Grasmere Street.
- Residents will receive further notice before the trials are installed.
- Planters will be used to temporarily close the lane.
- This will allow road space to be reallocated towards other users of the street and improve the quality of the space outside the schools – for rest, play and connection.
- One-way streets generally result in fewer crashes with pedestrians as there’s fewer turning movements.
- Additional changes will be made to discourage drivers from speeding.
SEPTEMBER
The trial extension to the existing School Street will start in September.
The timed closure will be extended to include:
- Windermere Road (from Grasmere Street to Gordon Street).
- Glebe Street (from Prescott Street).
The School Street will continue to be operated by school staff and operate at school drop-off and pick-up times:
- 8.15am - 9.15am
- 3.00pm - 4.00pm
Residents and parents will receive further notice at the beginning of the new school year before the extension is installed.
If the trial is successful, ANPR cameras will enforce the timed closure going forward.
