Parental Survey for Breakfast and After School Childcare
About this survey
The Department of Education's ambition is that all parents in England with primary school aged children will be able to access wraparound childcare in their local area between the hours of 8 am and 6 pm from Monday to Friday during the school term by 2026.
Why should you get involved?
Your feedback in this survey will help Wigan Council identify any gaps in before and after school childcare services within the Borough, identify any likely future demand for services for individual schools and help us ensure that there is enough childcare services to meet the needs of all working parents.
The expansion of services needed to meet parental demand may include the delivery of services by a range of childcare providers, such as a local childminder, private or voluntary organisation not necessarily the school your child attends.
Not all schools have the space to set up a childcare service within school and in these circumstances alternative local premises will be considered.
Completing the Survey
If you have children that attend different primary schools then you will need to complete a separate survey for each school they attend.
Please be aware the number order of questions will be dependant on how you respond to a question, as you will be directed to the next relevant question to you.
What is wraparound care?
Wraparound care is before and after school childcare for primary school aged children in England during term time, such as breakfast clubs and regular after school provision that runs until 6 pm or later. The care should be available every school day outside of regular school hours and is aimed at helping parents access more childcare and work the hours they want to. This is different from out-of-school activities, or school clubs, which are less frequent and can be a one-off activity. Around 60 percent of primary schools across England currently offer wraparound care, both before and after school.
Private, voluntary, and independent providers, including childminders and early years settings, are also able to offer wraparound care. Often, it’s run on a school site or another setting in the local area.
Searching for childcare

Feedback
The survey with parents on before and after school is now closed, firstly we would like to thank everyone who submitted a response and also thank the primary schools in Wigan for promoting the survey with the parents of children attending the school
We revived 1482 responses from parents, the response rate from parents across all the school varied greatly, a breakdown is shown below
Schools Responses
Zero responses 27 Schools
1 to 10 responses 40 Schools
11 to 20 responses 11 Schools
21 to 30 responses 11 Schools
31 plus responses 15 Schools
The highest number of responses was 124 from one school
We determined that to draw any meaningful conclusions we would only fully analyse any schools results with over 20 responses, the results were shared with the schools so they could assess the current and future demand for wraparound childcare in their school, we have since met with schools to encourage to develop additional wraparound services (new services, increased number of places and increased operating hours).
We are still meeting with schools to encourage them to develop wrap around services where their is demand to support the previous governments ambition to give all children the opportunity to take up a wraparound place between the hours of 8:00 am & 6:00 pm. We have approved 3 projects for increased wraparound places at 3 schools provided by the school directly or by a private provider, we have supported the schools with revenue or capital funding to allow the childcare places to be developed using funding made available by the government.
