Potential Future Redevelopment – Land at Yates Street, Leigh

Housing Context

Across the country and here in Wigan borough there is unprecedented and growing demand for affordable housing. Wigan Council’s Housing Register has more than doubled over the last few years to about 15,000 applicants.

Through our new build housing programme, we are working proactively to deliver sustainable, affordable homes, in line with current and future housing legislation, and the need to play our part in tackling climate change.

Yates Street

The council actively manages its land and property to ensure that it is used to best effect to meet local priorities; including delivering much-needed good quality, affordable homes and the land at Yates Street, Leigh has been identified as a potential site for a small development of new homes.

Proposals

We are looking to develop 8 bungalows on the site for affordable rent. These will consist of a range of 1, 2 and 3 bed high quality and energy efficiency bungalows and be available for general let. Any new homes will be allocated through the Council’s approved allocations policy to households on the Housing Register. The Council will own and manage the homes on completion.

Following the consultation on the proposals for Yates Street, few comments were provided, and these tended to be positive and supportive of the scheme in general. No comments were made with regards to the design that would require further amendments to the plans.

We would like to inform you that a planning application to develop the land at Yates Street, Leigh was submitted to Planning, this can be viewed on the Council’s planning portal link below. There, you will be able to view all associated documents.
